Rigid light pipe eases PCB positioning, eliminates glare

Suited for a wide range of medium to high volume applications, the 4.34mm diameter LPCR Series easily extends light from the board to the desired surface. No physical connection between the light pipe and LED (SMT or through hole) is required, providing versatility for assembly. The front panel mount light pipe features crushable ribs that also simplifies installation and maintenance. For harsh, high-vibration applications, the LPCR Series is available with an optional retainer to ensure secure and uniform placement of the light pipe to the panel. The LPCR Series is available in a wide range of standard lengths from 3.2mm to 25.4mm, as well as custom lengths to simplify PCB positioning in relation to the display panel. Made of optical grade polycarbonate 94V-0 clear material, the LPCR Series is compliant with RoHS and REACH requirements. On April 6, 2015, Frank Hommel was leading a group of guests at his Bar H Working Dude Ranch on a horseback ride. The horses got thirsty, so Hommel and crew rode cross-country in search of a watering hole. Along the way, his horse Samson suddenly stopped and refused to go any further. Ahead of them was a rock sticking out of the sandy soil. Hommel had never seen his horse act this way before, so he dismounted to get a closer look at the red, dimpled mass. Something inside told him this strange, out of place boulder had to be a meteorite. Here’s the crazy thing — Hommel’s hunch was correct. Lots of people pick up an odd rock now and then they think might be a meteorite, but in nearly every case it isn’t. Meteorites are exceedingly rare, so you’re chances of happening across one are remote. But this time horse and man got it right. The rock that stopped Samson that April day was the real deal and would soon be classified and named the Clarendon (c) stony meteorite. Only the top third of the mass broke the surface; there was a lot more beneath the soil. Hommel used a tractor to free the beast and tow it to his home. Later, when he and his wife DeeDee got it weighed on the feed stor...

Demand for cannabidiol (CBD) products may be on the rise – their recent inclusion in a dedicated pavilion at the Natural Products Expo East trade show was just one indication of this trend – but new research from the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) has found that shoppers are still confused about what CBD is, what it does and whether such products are safe. What’s more, with one in three Americans already using CBD, most (76%) assume that CBD products are subject to federal regulations and safety oversight when no such regulations currently exist. When informed of this fact, 82% of Americans expressed alarm, with 67% of those saying they were “extremely” or “very” concerned. Another 84% said that they were worried about the inconsistent regulations that could result from the current state-by-state patchwork system.  “It is the role of federal agencies to ensure a safe and transparent consumer marketplace – but the CBD market is currently the Wild West,” noted Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of the Washington, D.C.-based GMA, which will become the Consumer Brands Association in January 2020. “Without a uniform federal regulatory framework in place, consumers lack the bas...

Every product is independently selected by (obsessive) editors. Things you buy through our links may earn New York a commission. Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. (You can learn more about our rating system and how we pick each item here.) And while we’ve written about lots of face-washing products before — including cleansers for all skin types, a powerful acne-fighting cleanser, and the best washcloths for your face — here we’ve rounded up the best facial-cleansing brushes as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers on Sephora.com. We first heard about this affordable cleansing brush when writer Alison Freer called it “the best $6 I’ve ever spent,” saying it’s more effective, gentler, and easier to clean than her Clarisonic. With more than 2,000 positive reviews on Sephora, it looks like she’s in good company. “I entered with low expectations and was blown away,” writes a reviewer. “I don’t exfoliate often (ever), so after one use ...

Amazon is shipping expired baby formula and other out-of-date foods

Amazon’s sprawling marketplace, consisting of millions of third-party sellers, has become a go-to site for many grocery shoppers, especially since the company’s acquisition of Whole Foods over two years ago. But an increasing number of consumers are finding that, just as the broader Amazon Marketplace has a major issue with counterfeits and unsafe products, the grocery section is littered with similarly problematic items in the form of expired foods. From baby formula and coffee creamer to beef jerky and granola bars, items are arriving spoiled and well past their sell-by date, Amazon customers say. Interviews with brands, consumers, third-party sellers and consultants all point to loopholes in Amazon’s technology and logistics system that allow for expired items to proliferate with little to no accountability. Consumer safety advocates worry that as the marketplace grows, the problem will only get worse. Within Amazon’s $900 billion empire, food sellers are among the more than 2.5 million businesses using the site for distribution, a group that now accounts for 58% of the company’s total merchandise sold. Third-party merchants sell products, new an...

Weep holes are the gaps left between some bricks in external masonry walls. They serve two

Weep holes are the gaps left between some bricks in external masonry walls. They serve two important purposes: Ventilation of the internal wall cavity: Without ventilation, mildew, dry rot and damp reduce the life of the internal wall studs and other building materials within the cavity. Inadequate ventilation is the main cause of ‘Leaky Building Syndrome’. Drainage: Water that enters the cavity due to capillary action, condensation, damage, or accidental flooding needs to escape somewhere. In tropical and sub-tropical areas of Australia it is not unusual to see water flowing from the weep holes on the prevailing side of well constructed houses after a ‘gully raker’ or monsoonal storm. If weep holes are left unprotected they provide access to the wall cavity for rodents and insects. Swarming bees and European wasps love creating nests in cavities. Field mice make a track through the weep holes looking for warmth. Snakes, cockroaches and spiders find refuge, and food, in the cavity. Downlights, extractor fans and holes for plumbing or electronics become the internal entry point for these unwelcome visitors. In desperation many occupants resort to blocking weep holes w...

How to use the Shop feature on Instagram to buy products

If you are a frequent Instagram user, chances are you may have noticed some posts in your feed with a small shopping bag icon, tucked in the lower left-hand corner.  This is Instagram’s Shop feature, which includes products offered by hundreds of brands and retailers across the world — and it’s a wise investment from the social media platform.   Analysts told Business Insider that Instagram’s move to shopping will be so successful that it will generate $10 billion in revenue by 2021. Using the Shop feature is easy, too. Any post with a shopping bag icon has a product or products linked to it — just tap on the product name, and you’re taken to the description page where you can save it for later, or buy it now.  Some products are available to purchase without even leaving the app, while others take you to the retailer’s website to finalize the transaction.  Some retailers partner with Instagram to provide a check-out process within the app. Most of those retailers are featured on Instagram’s @shop account.  Instagram’s @shop account features many retailers that have items available for purchase on the app. Meira Gebel/Business Insider 2. ...
