Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. (You can learn more about our rating system and how we pick each item here.)
And while we’ve written about lots of face-washing products before — including cleansers for all skin types, a powerful acne-fighting cleanser, and the best washcloths for your face — here we’ve rounded up the best facial-cleansing brushes as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers on Sephora.com.
We first heard about this affordable cleansing brush when writer Alison Freer called it “the best $6 I’ve ever spent,” saying it’s more effective, gentler, and easier to clean than her Clarisonic. With more than 2,000 positive reviews on Sephora, it looks like she’s in good company. “I entered with low expectations and was blown away,” writes a reviewer. “I don’t exfoliate often (ever), so after one use of this, my skin was transformed. Supersoft. Even my boyfriend noticed my cheeks felt softer. It definitely provides a better clean than with only fingers, and when I remember to consistently use it, I break out less.” Another adds, “I have oily, acne-prone skin, and this really helps keep it decongested. With regular use, my pores look great, and the gentle massage is a nice perk. Ironically, this $6 pad works far better than my $200 Clarisonic, which has since been shelved.”
Lots more agree that cleansing with this silicone pad leaves skin feeling totally fresh. “I can tell it cleanses the dirt, makeup, oil, and bacteria out of my pores. The texture of the pad seems to grab the dirt and pull it out of my pores, leaving my skin soft and ready for my daily or nightly regimen,” writes one reviewer, who also likes that “it’s easily portable and dries very quickly after use” and “has a suction cup that I can use to hang it up on the wall of the shower.”
If you’re looking for a motorized facial-cleansing brush, this easy-to-clean silicone model is a favorite of reviewers with all different skin types. “I actually get excited to wash my face every day, which seemed like a chore before,” writes a reviewer who loves that this brush “leaves my face feeling soft and clean.” A reviewer who’s been using the Luna Mini for a month says, “I have had minimal breakouts, the texture has improved dramatically, blemishes have faded, and my skin is so much smoother.” Others like that it “cleans deep but isn’t abrasive so that I can use it daily,” is “waterproof [with a] long-lasting charge,” and is “waaaay more hygienic” than one with bristle brush heads.
“The teeny bumps on my cheeks are gone, the pores around my nose are significantly clearer and less noticeable, my dry patches are gone, and I have not seen a single new blemish since I began using the Luna,” writes a happy reviewer who at first worried that this brush felt too gentle to be effective. A reviewer who calls it a “life changer” says, “Now that I’ve been using it for almost a month, I’ve noticed that the majority of my trouble blackhead spots (chin, nose, etc.) have started to disappear! This tool helped to encourage and excite me to wash my face every morning and night because it makes face washing fun!” Lots of reviewers agree it’s “very gentle yet perfectly effective for deep cleansing,” and many use the anti-aging function to massage in serums, “helping to get full benefit of the product you are using.” A reviewer even claims, “I really do see a reduction in fine lines around my eye area whenever I use it.”
While this (less expensive) Foreo brush has all the benefits of the others, reviewers like that it’s perfectly sized for travel. “As someone who takes great care of their skin and has an extensive routine, I would have never guessed that a simple, relatively inexpensive product could change the whole game,” writes a reviewer who also exclaims, “The blackheads that I’ve had for my entire life on my nose are gone. I REPEAT! GONE! I never thought this was something that could even be possible, but they have disappeared. My texture has dissipated, and I feel like my other products work better.” One owner says, “This is a WONDERFUL skincare product to have, as it is perfect for traveling and will fit anywhere in your bathroom. It feels like a 60-second massage, and the aftermath is soft, supple, and clean skin!”
If you’re considering a cleansing device with bristle brush heads, reviewers think this one is ideal for beginners and offers lots of functionality. “This model comes equipped with a ‘learning stage,’ i.e., the sonic intensity will build up over the first two weeks. It’ll start out super-weak to get your skin accustomed to it and then build to full strength,” writes a reviewer. It’s also a smart device that connects to the Clarisonic app. This reviewer explains, “The app allows you to select different programmed washes to your brush. Regular, gentle, etc. You can also program it to remove a mask, clean your man’s face, or do an eye massage or face massage. The last two require different heads that are sold separately but are lovely.”
A longtime Clarisonic fan says this brush is “totally worth the upgrade. I like that you can choose different preprogrammed cleaning modes or create your own. I personally like daily cleanse mode in the morning and then the complete makeup-removal routine in smart mode in the evening. There are also routines for different brush heads, like the foundation brush (flawless blending in 60 seconds, yes, please!) and the anti-aging facial massage.”
Like our best-rated pick, this manual facial-cleansing brush comes from Sephora’s in-house brand and is beloved by hundreds of reviewers. “This brush creates a great lather and exfoliates like a dream,” writes a happy user. “Much better than fingertips and cleaner than washcloths. The white bristle side leaves my skin slightly tingling, so if you have sensitive skin, the white side may irritate too much, but to me it’s the feeling of clean, exfoliated, sparkling skin. The pink silicone side is gentle and safe for daily use.” Another raves, “My face is not only as smooth and as soft as a baby’s butt again, but it’s also squeaky clean when I’m done! I’m surprised how little it costs, considering its amazing, deep-cleansing abilities!”
For a manual brush without replaceable brush heads, reviewers are impressed with this Shiseido model’s effectiveness and longevity. “I bought mine when I was a teenager with acne problems — 10–12 years ago,” writes a reviewer. “The lady behind the Shiseido counter told me it would last forever. Wow, does it! It still looks new and still purifies and massages my skin like the day I shelled out my allowance money for it all those years ago. I’ve since outgrown my acne problem, but this brush is still put to good use every other night to keep my skin gently exfoliated so now my anti-aging creams can absorb in better.” Many echo this reviewer’s sentiment that it’s “such a treat to use,” because “the bristles are very gentle, so the exfoliating action is minimal/mild, but the little pink rubber bristles have a mild massaging quality.” Finally, one reviewer says, “I use it every day. It’s not too harsh on sensitive skin, and it’s a ride-or-die product for me.”
